Jones County Republican Special Convention minutes – Tues. Aug 23, 2011
Meeting was called to order at 7 PM at the Masonic Lodge, Anamosa, IA by County Republican Chairman, Curtis Stewart. Curtis lead us in the pledge of allegiance and Richard Stiver gave an invocation.
First item of business was the election of a Convention Chair and Secretary.
It was moved by Dawn Burmahl and seconded by Russ Smith to appoint Al Conrad as Convention Chair and Gerald Retzlaff as Secretary. Motion carried.
Chair Al Conrad then stated the sole purpose of the convention was to elect the Republican candidate for Jones County Sheriff.
Al then referred the delegates to printed rules of the convention everyone should have received from the credentials committee. It was moved by Russ Smith and 2nd by Elizabeth Kinley to accept the rules. Russ Smith moved and Curt Stewart 2nd to amend the rules by inserting that the voting be done by secret ballot replacing show of hands as a voting procedure. Amendment carried.
Credentials committee reported that 45 delegates were seated for the election.
Chair Conrad called for nominations.
Russ Smith nominated Rick LaMere and Ivan Eden nominated Greg Graver as the Republican candidate for Jones County Sheriff.
Curt Stewart moved and Elizabeth Kinley 2nd that nominations cease. Carried
Chair Conrad then announced that the rules for the comment portion of the meeting would be 25 minutes. Each candidate would get 4 minutes for introductory comments and the questions will be asked by the delegates each having 1 minutes to respond. By flip of a coin Rick LaMere was first to comment and they alternated being first to each of the 10 questions offered up by the delegates.
Ballots were then passed out to the delegates. Tellers for the count were Larry Krutzfield, Jan Swanson and Randy Achenbach and each candidate had a ballot monitor present.
During the counting Curt Stewart reminded all delegates that they are invited to come to the Central committee meetings on Sept 1st at McOtto’s and the County Republican Fund raiser will be Oct 29th at the National Motorcycle Museum. Curt also briefly explained the up going State Senate race for the new District including 5 townships in Jones County and all of Delaware County. Plus there was a couple other announcements regarding future elections
The results of the election was Greg Graver with 10 votes and Rick LaMere 35.
Both Convention Chair Conrad and County Chair Stewart thanks everyone for attending including 37 observers
